Dettifoss, western side, Iceland
On the island of Iceland their is no architectural monuments, palaces and famous art museums. But every year hundreds of thousands of tourists come here to enjoy the pristine scenery of northern nature, waterfalls and geysers, volcanoes and glaciers.
Dettifoss (“raging waterfall”) is the largest waterfall, not only in Iceland, but also the most powerful in all of Europe! Average consumption of water here comes to 500 cubic meters per second, and the imagination is not much inferior to Niagara.
The most powerful waterfall in Europe, located in the northeast of Iceland on the river with the unpronounceable name Yekulsau-au-Fedlum Yekulsaurglyuvur in the national park.
Width of Dettifoss waterfall about 100 meters, height – 44 meters, which is 9 meters less than the Niagara Falls.
Average water consumption of Dettifoss – 200 cubic meters per second, and at times reach 500.
Title Dettifoss means “bubbling waterfall”. It is also called the “European Niagara.” In fairness it should be noted that the volume of falling water in the present Niagara reaches 5,700 or more cubic meters per second.
The dark rocks and huge stones … make atmospheric like another planet, “foreign”
Standing at the waterfall you can feel the bumps in the way, and the noise of water can stun even for a moment. Not surprisingly, the first Icelandic settlers called it the “King of the waterfalls.”
Dettifoss and Selfoss are two of the most epic locations in all of Iceland and has a special place in my heart since this is where I experienced the sunset on my first day in Iceland as a photographer. Dettifoss is also the strongest waterfall of all of Europe. The area has also been used for the prolog scene of the movie Prometheus.
The two waterfalls are located in the north-eastern part of Iceland 50km from lake Myvatn. The two waterfalls can be approached from two sides. It takes around an hour to drive to the other side so you’ll have to choose. Both sides are easy to find since there’re signs pointing towards Dettifoss along the roads and the area is getting more and more touristy. The western side is easiest to get to because of the asphalt road 862 and it has the best golden hour light during summer and winter.
At this location, it can get very wet because of the water vapour so remember to bring something to wipe off your lens. The sun sets in the west, which gives a beautiful backlight to the water from this location.
